Mischief Of One Kind And Another

Mischief Of One Kind And Another is a bijou anthology of poetry. Published by Nine Pens Press as part of their ‘nines’ series, it features work by me and two other wonderful poets: Jennie E Owen and Ben Tufnell. We were paired together because the themes of our work and the way we approach writing complement and bounce off each other well.

My poems in this collection are based on classic children’s books. You’ll find The Owl And The Pussycat, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Peter Pan and more here, all with a modern or surprising twist. What happens when the witch’s house of sweets goes up for sale? How do the Wild Things feel, when Max sails away for his tea? Does Narnia feel the effects of climate change?

Jennie offers a rich and often unsettling journey through a series of haunted paintings in her poems. Colour and story, light and dark, and a skilful ability to personify painted figures and expand their worlds make these poems hugely compelling.

In his poetry, Ben takes us to a folkloric world of ghosts, owls and crocodiles. Filled with the tricks of memory and childhood dreams tinged with darkness, these clever, ethereal poems will stay with you.

Praise for Mischief Of One Kind And Another:

“Mischief Of One Kind And Another” is a gingerbread house of a poetry book, beguiling the reader with an intoxicating mix of childhood memory and menace. Jennie E. Owen’s compelling ekphrastic poems dance intricately with notorious artworks (and the legends surrounding them) in unexpected and haunting ways. Jen Feroze interrogates everyday darkness through the lens of children’s literature, in a set of ‘after’ poems as powerfully imagistic and playfully unsettling as anything she has published to date. Ben Tufnell’s poems are spare, vivid, clever, and arresting, replete with phrases that reverberate long after reading. The result is an anthology that intrigues and bewitches in ways the reader will not be able to resist, and will thoroughly enjoy.” – Mary Ford Neal, author of Dawning and Relativism
